The Necessity of Silence
This is an interview book of world film composers. Silence, which indicates the space without sound, its existential meaning is just equivalent to the technique of “leaving blank” in Chinese painting. From nothing comes from nothing, “leaving blank” doesn’t mean empty but roots in the essence of everything. Therefore, the meaning of silence isn’t only the disappearance of sound, it constitutes the sound itself. We leave blank for most of the area in book pages, its effect out stands the black context as if creating the montage in film. We also display twelve alphabets on the cover of the book, such idea comes from the concept of harmony in music. We pick up the first alphabet of the names of interviewees and display it on the cover with different fonts.
